The founder and managing attorney at V. Soma Law is Vanessa Soma, Esq., who is a public interest attorney and social justice advocate. Attorney Soma combats gender-based violence and discrimination, including misogyny, cissexism, heterosexism, and racism, by advocating for the legal rights and remedies available to victims of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, discrimination, persecution, and torture.
Attorney Soma has worked with and represented clients seeking restraining orders for domestic violence, elder abuse, and civil harassment, as well as divorce, paternity, and child custody. Attorney Soma works closely with the Legal Aid Society of Orange County/Community Legal Services as a volunteer and incubator attorney, representing clients at hearings, preparing paperwork for clients’ cases, and providing information at legal clinics. Attorney Soma has also volunteered with Compton Community Legal Services’ Domestic Violence Prevention Project, and served as a JusticeCorps volunteer at Stanley Mosk Courthouse in Downtown Los Angeles.
In addition to family law experience, Attorney Soma also has extensive experience working with clients on VAWA, U-Visa, T-Visa, DACA, adjustment of status, asylum, and other immigration relief for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, persecution, and torture. Attorney Soma has volunteered or worked on immigration matters at the Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Trafficking (CAST-LA), Urban Justice Center’s Sex Workers Project in New York City, Los Angeles Public Counsel, and the Gender Rights Asylum Project in Orange County.
Many of Attorney Soma’s immigration and family law clients have included transgender women, transgender men, gay men, and lesbian women. Attorney Soma has also volunteered conducting legal research and drafting reports, briefs, and memoranda on gender and pregnancy discrimination in employment, as well as gender identity discrimination in health care and policing practices, for the LGBT Rights, Gender Equity, and LGBT Rights projects at the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California (ACLU-SC).
Attorney Soma graduated from UCLA School of Law in 2013 with a concentration in Critical Race Studies, and also earned a Master’s degree in Public Policy with a specialization in Gender Studies from UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. In 2009, Attorney Soma graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts degree in African American Studies. Attorney Soma is admitted to practice in the California state courts as well as the United States District Court of the Central District of California. Attorney Soma is a member of the family law section of the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles and the immigration section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association.
