Marilyn Barrett’s practice focuses primarily on corporate law and taxation, emphasizing business formation, partnership and limited liability company agreements, mergers and acquisitions, and tax controversy proceedings.
She received her B.S. in Accounting with highest distinction from the University of Kansas and her J.D. from UCLA, where she was an Associate Editor of the UCLA Law Review. Marilyn is a Certified Public Accountant. Marilyn has served as Chair and as a member of the Executive Committee of the Taxation Section for both the State Bar of California and the Los Angeles County Bar Association.
Marilyn is active in community affairs. She is currently Co-Chair of the Board of Trustees and a member of the Friends Board of Directors of the Saban Free Clinic. She previously served on the governing board and was elected as President two years in a row. Throughout her legal career, she has provided pro bono legal services to more than 20 charitable organizations to assist them in securing tax-exempt status. Marilyn has also received numerous awards. She was honored by the Saban Free Clinic with the 2008 Lenny Somberg Award, the 2000 Women of Achievement Award in Law given by the Century City Chamber of Commerce; the 1987 Humanitarian Award from the Los Angeles Commission On Assaults Against Women and the 1993 Commendation from the Los Angeles County Commission on the Status of Women for her work with victims of sexual assault.
Marilyn has authored more than 40 articles for legal journals and is the contributing editor on Federal Taxation for the CEB California Business Law Reporter.
